Saturday began calmly in Germany's second largest city, where about 5 000 people visited the annual festival Schanzenfest. But in the evening degenerated street festival in Hamburg, when the demonstrators began to build barricades and set fire to police vehicles. At least 27 policemen were injured during confrontations.
- Total 67 persons were arrested, suspected of arson, for having thrown rocks and bottles as well as vandalism and rebellion, said a police spokeswoman.
The authorities had set up a large police force, as previous years' festivals have degenerated - and police sources claimed on Sunday that many of the protesters were left activists.
The German Interior Ministry estimates that there are about 6 000 activists belonging to the extreme left and who advocate violent means and that these groups can be linked to more than 700 attacks last year.
